My house is filled with a dozen different smart lights and I’m proud to say that no two devices are exactly alike. From sickle moon lamps to LED light strips, each smart home device features a markedly different form factor.
Depending on the price, the quality of each smart light varies. Of course, this is true for virtually any consumer good in the world. Fortunately, value products that fit tight budgets are on the rise in the tech sector, and the world of smart lighting hasn’t been left out.
The XMCOSY+ Floor Lamp is an intelligent lamp that has stepped on a highly competitive stage. This modern and minimalist lamp features a ring of light at the top. The twist here is that the ring has two sides; one with brilliant shades of white and the other bathing you in RGB exuberance. Sounds good on paper, but how does it work in the real world? I put it to the test and here are my findings.
XMCOSY+ Floor Lamp: Price and availability
You can buy the brand’s XMCOSY+ floor lamp directly or through a retailer like Amazon or Walmart. While the price on XMCOSY website is $99.99 and $112.99 even more expensive at Walmart. You can save $10 by buying it for $89.99 on Amazon.
The XMCOSY+ floor lamp comes in two metallic shades, both of which cost the same. There is a plain black variant and a rustic model called Vintage Bronze. I tried the last color combination.
XMCOSY+ floor lamp: the good stuff
XMCOSY ships the XMCOSY+ floor lamp in six or seven pieces. Some assembly is required, but you won’t need any additional tools for installation. It’s a simple matter of screwing the rod pieces together and connecting some wires that takes almost no time.
The XMCOSY+ floor lamp is constructed of fairly heavy aluminum and iron parts, but the smart lamp stands well balanced thanks to its weighted, solid circular base. In the middle of the bar, you’ll find touch buttons that can turn the smart light on or off, and also change the light’s presets. There are two buttons, one for each side of the light. I found these to be highly responsive and convenient to use.
In general, the Vintage Bronze has a charming rustic look. It fits well both in my living room and in my bedroom. Because the XMCOSY+ floor lamp has such a minimalist design, you can easily place it anywhere and it complements the interior environment in an unassuming way.
The double-sided ring light on top rotates up to 350 degrees, which is really clever. The idea is that the white side can be used for work or everyday use, while the colorful RGB section can be used to set the mood for parties, hangouts, movies or gaming sessions.
If you feel lazy to get up and change the light controls via the buttons, XMCOSY has a dedicated mobile app for Android and iOS. The app enables hands-free interaction with the smart lamp, with a little help from Alexa or Google Assistant. Since this is a Wi-Fi smart lamp, you don’t need to turn on your phone’s Bluetooth when using the XMCOSY app.
All of these versatile methods of control are incredibly convenient. You can add the XMCOSY+ floor lamp to your Google Home app and issue commands to turn the lamp on or off, change the color of the ring light, or set a schedule for it to turn on or off automatically.
Flipping and rotating the smart ring light is fun and functional at the same time. You can tilt the ring light up to a 180° angle to cast softer light into your room. There are many possibilities.
The really wonderful thing is that white light is dazzlingly bright, so one of these smart lamps is enough to illuminate your entire living room. It’s also great for photography because you can easily move the XMCOSY+ smart floor lamp around according to your needs.
XMCOSY app has many hidden modes inside. You can create automated schedules, control a set of XMCOSY smart lighting products together, and even create schedules for a set of brand smart home devices in bulk. There are some cool controls like syncing your lamp automations to the weather.
The XMCOSY+ floor lamp is quite simple and has a lot to like. As far as a smart lamp goes, it works well and has enough mainstream features to please the masses.
XMCOSY+ floor lamp: the not so good things
Now, I have some questions about this $100 smart lamp. Let’s start with the fact that the RGB side of the ring light only displays one color at a time. There are many other smart lamps in the same price range that can do this.
Since the lamp is well built, I’m willing to overlook it, but the biggest problem is the lack of a built-in microphone. Sure, you get a music mode within the XMCOSY app, but it actually uses the phone or the smart speaker’s mic to make it all work.
This also means you can’t issue voice commands if your phone is unlocked and you’re not using an Alexa device. Not only do you have to unlock your phone for that, but it also causes problems with music mode if your phone screen is locked. If your phone closes the screen while music mode is in use, the XMCOSY+ floor lamp returns to the last used light mode.
There is more to dislike about the clunky XMCOSY app. The dynamic color modes are really wonky and come back when you close the app or go back to browse the other presets.
Sometimes the app crashes when you go to your phone’s home screen and turn on both sides of the ring light to full brightness. It is not only very annoying, but also harmful to the eyes. Overall, the XMCOSY+ floor lamp companion app was not as elegant as I would have liked. It needs a massive overhaul.
Aside from the software issues, I was also a bit disappointed with the depth of colors and the brightness level of the RGB side of the light. Beyond the basic reds, blues, greens, and pinks, the other hues were hard to tell apart. Purple in particular is an impossible hue for this smart lamp.
When I set both the white and colored parts of the double-sided XMCOSY+ floor lamp to full brightness, it almost felt like the colored light was only half as bright as its white counterpart. Fortunately, you can greatly adjust the warmth of that section, because that’s the side I ended up using the most.
XMCOSY+ floor lamp: Competition
Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and similar retailers are full of cheap smart lamps and lights from well-known brands and unknown companies alike. Most of them usually cost cheaper than the XMCOSY+ floor lamp, around $60.
If you want the best of the best for smart lights, Govee Lyra is the obvious choice. You get Govee’s fantastic app and the smart corner floor lamp can emit multiple colors at once. It costs around $150 to $130 and you will often find further discounts for the Lyra lamp.
If you already have a floor lamp that you love, there is a much easier solution. All you need is a great smart bulb to turn your pre-existing “dump” floor lamp into a smart one for a fraction of the cost. It’s a smart, low-effort solution that doesn’t require you to buy big, expensive fixtures for your home, similar to this XMCOSY+ floor lamp.
XMCOSY+ floor lamp: should you buy it?
You should buy this if…
- You like the double-sided ring light design
- You want Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility
- You need an affordable yet premium looking smart lamp
- You don’t like tedious assembly.
You shouldn’t buy this if…
- You want a deep, multicolored reward
- You need a lamp with a built-in microphone
- You don’t like glitchy apps with passion
XMCOSY+ Floor Lamp brings a unique two-sided ring light to the masses. It’s not terribly expensive, so if you like the design, you should buy it. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll pay for that smart ring light because of the frustrating app.
If you don’t care too much about the cool form factor and all that flip-and-twist stuff, check out the Govee Lyra instead. Better yet, if you want to maximize the value proposition, just buy a pack of two RGB smart bulbs and fit them into your existing floor lamps.
double sided lamp
XMCOSY+ floor lamp stands out from the crowd by bringing you a cool double-sided ring light. One end has an adjustable white light, while the other end features a colorful RGB light. You can control the smart lamp in many ways, but the app crashes and tends to get in the way most of the time.
