Thrive is hiring a Bike and Trail Coordinator

The Bicycle and Trails Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Director of Trails in maintaining the trail system in Allen County. In addition, they will help oversee the free bike share program, coordinate and implement the earn-a-bike program, and work with Thrive’s partners to develop and construct new trail systems.

Duties and responsibilities

Track maintenance
  • Ensure regular maintenance of footpaths and footpaths, bridges, footbridges, fences and other track facilities to ensure the built environment is maintained to high standards. This includes, but is not limited to mowing, tree trimming, brush burning, invasive species removal, and trail grading.
  • Assist with new trail design, including assisting Thrive’s partners in trail route planning and review and providing input to resource management plans, including local or regional trail development plans.
  • Landscape by planting native flowers, grasses, shrubs and bushes.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment used for track maintenance.
  • Conduct safety inspections of trails, walkways, bridges, fences, and other trail facilities
  • Performs emergency inspections from any storm-related incident and assists with repairs to damaged areas and removal of any hazards or dangerous trees.
  • Maintains groundwater and surface water flow in and around trails using site grading, ditches, culverts, perforated pipes and other infrastructure.
  • Maintains, installs, erects and separates signs on wood, metal and concrete.
  • Limbs, bends and disposes of trees using chain saws, tractors and/or other equipment.
  • Performs landscape activities.,
  • Sweeps and cleans trailhead areas including various parking lots, picnic areas and benches in the trail network system.
  • Fills holes and other surface defects within gravel parking areas within the path network.
Bicycle program
  • Assist in overseeing and coordinating all bike and trail programs, including bike share and earn-a-bike programs.
  • Teach community members how to repair and maintain bicycles.
  • Ensure quality and safety of cycling equipment, perform routine maintenance and carry out repairs.
  • Oversee advocacy and outreach activities that educate the public about Thrive’s cycling programs.

Other areas of responsibility

  • Assist in organizing and leading volunteer work crews to perform bike maintenance, trail maintenance and trail construction when needed. Identify recruitment needs and opportunities for volunteers in the region.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as installing fountains and other tasks.
  • Help track bike and trail use data.
  • Prepare and submit recommendations reports for the bike and trails program
  • Other projects and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Required
  • 1-3 years of experience with grounds or path maintenance.
  • Physically fit and able to perform assigned tasks.
  • Possess skills, knowledge and experience in operating and maintaining a wide range of equipment including lawn mowers, tractors, chainsaws, blowers, weed eaters, hammer drills and hedge trimmers.
  • Ability to act courteously and respectfully to the public and colleagues in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs on minor equipment and tools.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a professional manner.
  • Professional attitude and appearance.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of trail construction concepts and techniques.
  • 1-3 years of practical experience working on bicycles.
  • Experience with building maintenance

  • Compensation and Benefits: $19.24/hour. Hourly position with medical and dental benefits and 100% of premiums paid by employer, IRA with 3% employer match, 120 hours of paid vacation per year and 10 paid vacation days
