This Atlanta pool house designed by Charlotte Lucas has all the trappings of a beach club

“Backyard Vacation.” When Charlotte Lucas received a call from her clients about designing a 2,000-square-foot pool for their Atlanta home, she envisioned actual step away. “They’re big travelers,” says the Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer. “They’ve stayed in some beautiful luxury hotels and resorts, and we wanted to bring that elevated style and design into their own backyard.”

Inside, a vaulted ceiling covered in bamboo, the floor is hand-painted in a black and white geometric pattern, and lush, trellis-inspired prints scattered on the tapestries and walls. The red-and-white cabana-striped outdoor drapery evokes long days of beach on the French Riviera—Lucas used them on pillows, dining chair cushions, and gorgeous poolside umbrellas. All that excitement couldn’t compromise the building’s essential functions, of course, so Lucas used high-performance fabrics throughout. “It had the space to be able to hold wet feet and wet swimwear, but also feel tall enough in its design to host an adult cocktail hour,” she explains. “Nothing can be so precious.”

While the main residence has a more traditional aesthetic, the designer says, “My clients were really open to pushing the envelope in a space that isn’t used every day.” “It makes you feel inside but a part of the outside.”
