The mayor of Washington, Iowa, turned himself in to law enforcement in Washington County this afternoon after being charged with sexual assault.
According to a criminal complaint, a 27-year-old man was interviewed by an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent on Wednesday, January 11. The interview followed a report the unnamed man made to a Washington Police Department officer earlier in the day.
The alleged victim reported being approached by Jaron Rosean, the mayor of Washington, about playing a bar game at JP’s 207 in Washington, near closing time on Sunday morning, January 8. from Roseanne.
The next day, on Thursday, January 12, an Iowa search warrant was served on surveillance footage at JP’s 207, a restaurant, bar, and live music venue owned by Rosien. The criminal complaint against Rosian states that surveillance shows that “at approximately 1:39 a.m., a person believed to be Rosian appeared in the vicinity of a person believed to be (the victim).” He went on to say that surveillance footage appeared to show multiple instances of sexual intercourse between Rosen and the alleged victim.
Rosian was also interviewed by Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation agents on January 12. He confirmed that he was in J.B. Roseanne has neither admitted nor denied any inappropriate contact. The complaint states that he “rather stated, because of his level of intoxication, that he could not remember”.
Jaron Rosean, 38, has been charged with third-degree sexual assault, a third-degree felony. He was sworn in as mayor of Washington in 2018 and ran unsuccessfully for the Iowa House of Representatives in June 2022, losing the Republican primary. He has owned JP’s 207 in Washington since 2012.
A statement from Roseanne released late this afternoon read: “I take these allegations very seriously. I also take this job, its duties and those who depend on me to complete it very seriously. For that reason, I will respectfully retract the official role from In order to focus on what is needed. During this time I am thinking and wanting to thank my family, friends and community for their support.”
