The Creative Center, Visalia partner to ‘do the right thing’

Negotiations between the city and two nonprofits have concluded, officially making The Creative Center and Visalia Players the new owners of a multi-unit downtown property.

The creative center — formed in 1977 — serves about 100 adults, some with special needs, while the Visalia Players — formed in 1957 — puts on several theater productions a year. Together, they have been leasing the 3-acre property from the city for $1 a year since the 1970s.

“I want to commend our city council for doing this,” said Executive Director of The Creative Center Joel Glick. “They did the right thing here by letting us stay and flourish.”

The announcement from the city comes a few weeks after the Visalia Players confirmed they had purchased the Ice House Theatre, one of the property’s seven units, after years of red tape.
