Reading Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part – in-depth research, hands-on testing, and bringing in experts for advice – so all you need to do is click ‘add to cart’. That’s why we call them Just the best.
If you grew up in the beginning, you probably have vivid memories of hanging out on a cartoon covered blob. We’re happy to report that the best couches for kids these days are no longer limited to those flashy-toned numbers. In fact, today’s kid-friendly furniture can easily be mistaken for miniature loveseats, and they’re durable too. While we know a few designer hacks for making adult furniture kid-proof (hello, FiberSeal), there’s nothing special about providing a designated spot for toddlers through tweens, be it for snacking, reading, or a good night’s sleep. old fashion key? puppet show? Besides, while our list of the best sofas for kids varies widely in shape (we’re talking both a Togo-esque beanbag chair and modular foam that’s more like building blocks), none should cramp your interior style.

Offering two more pieces than the cult-favorite Nugget, this set of six can come together in the form of a classic sofa, with back cushions and sheltered arms, or be configured into pretty much anything your kid likes, although reviewers revere it the most. often the seemingly endless fortress possibilities.

This sofa may just be impossible to grow out of as it is a small space saver that will earn the approval of guests of any age. We first saw the model in this attic converted nursery on the English coast of Kent, where it is an essential part of their seating arrangement. The first form is incredibly compact, taking up hardly any square footage thanks to a 20-inch depth which is still long enough for two kids!), before sticking out a full 71 inches, aka longer than twins. Although we would keep the back part up for a quasi-tufted headboard.
Best for Movie Nights: West Elm Kids Flip Floor Sleeper
Flip Floor Sleeper, West Elm ($550 and up)
Material: Varies | Dimensions: 71-by-33-by-21.5 inches | Filling: polyurethane foam
What we like:
- Adjustable to lie flat or sit upright
- Long enough to sit three
- Heavy – 60 pounds, to be exact
- Only place clean
Why we chose it: The slouchy silhouette of a beanbag-style floor cushion embodies that idea of cool and comfortable that will pass well as your child gets older.
Keep a couch on the floor in the kid-only zone (as designer Hollie Velten-Lattrell did) so you never have to worry about watching the same Disney movie over and over. While her original purchase from Urban Outfitters is no longer available, we’d argue this West Elm alternative is a close second. Plan to plop it in front of a TV or a projection screen. This is the type of couch that’s just as great for Saturday morning cartoons as it is for weekend movie nights (and if buttery popcorn happens to be the snack of choice, don’t sweat it – choose from a range of high-quality fabrics, including distressed velvet, tweed, and washed canvas).
Best for a Reading Nook: Crate & Kids Rattan Kids Twin Daybed
Rattan Kids Twin Daybed, Crate & Barrel ($1000)
Material: rattan | Dimensions: 85-by-42-by-36 inches | Filling: N/A
What we like:
- Solid wood slats
- Adjustable iron legs (handy if you have sloping floors!)
- Endless design possibilities, just add sheets and pillows
- You have to deliver the mattress
- Biggest option on the list
Why we chose it: It can hold a double mattress or two couch cushions, so it’s easy to change the color or pattern of the sheets or duvet covers you’re swaddling with.
technically this is a daybed, but if you put in enough cushions (to double up as back and armrests), it’s worthy of our list of the best couches for kids. Keep a fully stacked library within reach and it becomes an irresistible place to curl up with their latest Scholastic find. And no harm is done if they happen to fall asleep (it just happens to be Heather Taylor Home’s own kid’s sleeping place in their Laurel Canyon home). Plus, the sturdy iron base and legs won’t buckle if your child doesn’t exactly have the best track record with the “don’t jump on the bed” rule.
On our radar
Pottery Barn Teen Carmen Sofa
Carmen Sofa, Pottery Barn Teen ($599)
Togo-meets beanbag, but for less, this floor sofa can be wrapped in a velvety performance fabric, nubby bouclé, or a neutral twill that transitions easily from toddler to tween.
Gray Malin x fabric company sofa
Sofa, Gray Malin x Cloth Company ($1350)
For a touch of whimsy and heritage-level quality – we’re talking 100 percent cotton upholstery and solid wood legs – Maisonette’s made-to-order sofa offers a storybook-like illustration pattern that feels fabulous but not too childish. Seriously, we can see your kids passing these on to their grandkids (and so on and so forth).
Milliard modular children’s sofa
Modular Kids Sofa, Milliard ($160)
At a glance, you’d never guess that this tiny sofa can be disassembled into a bed, lightweight poufs or ottomans, and even a puppet theater. Other review-backed benefits: The velor cover is removable and machine washable, and it all arrives in one vacuum-sealed package. Did we mention it’s under $200?
Our Shopping Checklist
Designed with little people in mind, the best sofas for kids are compact and unobtrusive, even when sitting directly on the floor. Smaller dimensions make it easier for toddlers to crawl on and off safely, especially as playtime inevitably dissolves into rough housing.
Easy to clean materials
Spills and stains can always occur when children are involved. That’s why designers often opt for tight, textured or dark fabrics for sofas, because they can better hide the stains that won’t come out and tried blotting them with water, soap and vinegar, but without success. Pssst: Leather and velvet are actually more durable than parents think, and the real thing will take on a nice patina over time.
As we’ve confirmed: kids are messy. Somehow they always seem to have their hands in something or it doesn’t matter if you saw them diligently washing their hands, their fingers are still sticky from that peanut butter and jelly sandwich at lunch. That’s why we recommend sticking with performance fabrics. Aside from the sofas, many designers will even opt for sturdy textiles when upholstering a seat cushion or a window banquet (for example, Kate Hayes of Little Hayes Studio chose an indoor-outdoor-approved Schumacher fabric for a pre-teen room). They are less likely to wear or tear. High-density foam padding is also important to note as regular foam will deform more easily with age (although if you don’t plan on keeping them longer than your child outgrows them, this isn’t a detail to hold onto at ).
The last word
The best sofas for kids are designed to be the ideal seat for your kids from toddler to two years old. This is where they (hopefully) go to read, grab a bite to eat, or let’s face it, binge watch Peppa Pig on their tablet, so it should be as comfortable as it is durable.
