Yanjiang, the city of surfing – Yangyang, which embraces Seoraksan Mountain and the East Sea, is known as a city with scenic views of mountains and seas. It is a small city of 28,000 residents but has attracted a steady stream of tourists who have visited Yangyang for its abundant attractions. However, Yangyang has changed over the past few years. When the city suddenly emerged as the country’s surfing hotspot, young people began to come to Yangyang. As people gathered to surf, restaurants, cafes, and shops were also built, and the city, which was facing constraints in regional development due to an aging society, was finally revitalized. The city’s shift from a surfing culture has not only revitalized tourism, but has also impacted the influx of residents. Surfers are starting to build houses around the beaches where it’s great to surf. Moreover, the improvement in transportation infrastructure is noteworthy as a backdrop for regional revitalization. The opening of the Seoul-Yangyang Expressway in 2018 enhanced the accessibility of the metropolitan area and began supplying homes. Similarly, Yangyang is enjoying a surfing renaissance.
A land close to mountains and seas – Jukdo Beach in Yangyang, where the surfing houses are located, is an area that has led the surfing culture, so there are plenty of attractions and activities to enjoy. This beach stands side by side with Ingu Beach which is a sandy beach that stretches for 2 km with Jukdo, an island with many bamboos, in between, offering an exotic landscape with dense jungle with many bars, surf shops and cafes. A couple, the owners of the building, visited Yanygyang frequently because they were fascinated by the city’s attractions, and quickly established a relationship with the locals and bought a site after hearing the news that Twetgol Village was located in the west of the city. Jukdo Beach was to be developed as a residential site. The site is a step away from the beach and all three faces are surrounded by mountain. The perimeter is hidden by a road in the east that is open, and in view of the fact that buildings are to be built on the adjacent land, the site does not have a nice view. However, there was a mountain located on a relatively large land, so there was a lot of sunlight and the advantage was that the exclusive access road was divided into parts. An implicit beam casts onto an artificially shaped land and a view of somewhat projected buildings. In the midst of this, attention to positioning became the starting point for the design.
Three yards with a gentle breeze – In general, single-family homes have a main yard as they enter the homes from the road, and there are many instances where the homes are located in a corner of the site. However, this particular site was located in a natural green area, so construction work was only permitted on 20% of the site. After long consideration as to how to properly utilize the remaining 80% of the site, Three Yards was designed. After entering from the main exit, passing through the entrance yard, there is a courtyard, and through the kitchen, in front of the courtyard, there is an inner garden. This arrangement leads to an extension of the natural environment. The inner and outer structure are not separate, the opportunities for the inner side are designed to meet the outer space so that the outdoors can be fully enjoyed. It was important to be able to see the views of the mountains and the sky and feel the breeze. Because it is a second home located on a land surrounded by nature and stands out from the houses in the city to provide a relaxing experience.
non-everyday life space – The owner made a simple request about designing with a second home and guest house in mind. The owner wanted a house with a couple’s room, space for guests to stay, and a shared kitchen. The inside and outside of the building reflects the condition of their simple request. It is a simple two-storey building indicating the intention of the owner. Although a four-storey building could have been built on the site, it was constructed as a two-storey building with the use of the building in mind. The kitchen and guest room are on the first floor and there is a couple’s bedroom on the second floor. Since it is not an everyday space, the building is planned so that the rooms cater to a minimum level of functionality. The standalone outdoor kitchen is an adventurous appliance that takes into account the casual, everyday nature of the second home. The purpose of the second home is to enjoy life away from the city, so that the space is not focused on comfort, and it does not matter if the rooms and the kitchen are not adjoining. The kitchen that serves as a stopover between the patio and the indoor garden is a passage to encounter nature and a community space to interact with others.
wave frontage – In the case of buildings located near the ocean, salinity must be considered due to its geographical nature. Finishing materials with strong durability and ease of maintenance should be chosen in order for the buildings to be intact. Due to these reasons, seaside architecture mainly uses rock, concrete and aluminum but exposed concrete was applied keeping in mind the texture of the monolithic material. Rather than using smooth finishes that stand out from the surroundings, the patterns are designed to express dense woody stems or irregular linear shapes resembling upward waves. The civil construction template was used to embody 20mm wide vertical triangular lines. The bumpy side expresses natural changes based on the flow of time. Traces that cannot be helped due to the natural environment are accepted in a non-abrasive manner. In addition, the patterns and depth of the materials create various aspects based on the light. There is a time difference between the shadowed and shadowless side of the light, and the impression emanating from the building varies according to the light of the hour.
