Spectacular steel and glass staircase for MetallArt research institute

The ultra-modern glass cube in Uzwil in the canton of St. Gallen houses eight development and training centers in the areas of food, feed and advanced materials. The research institute was opened in 2019 and offers space for 300 employees.

Together with partners from science and industry, the research teams develop new sustainable approaches and solutions in the areas of nutrition and mobility.

Self-supporting spiral staircase

In the light and modern building complex, the bespoke staircase construction serves as a premium design element with a decisive effect on the entire interior design. With an astonishing interplay of materials and technical features, it displays the fascinating art of advanced stair construction.

Inside runs a box-shaped steel joist balustrade with an elegant notch for the LED lighting system. The cassette crosspiece on the outside houses the all-glass railing, completed by a stainless steel handrail.

In total, the staircase has an effective ramp width of approximately 1,500 mm and consists of a folded-down stepped structure made of sheet steel. The harmoniously rounded passages between the stairs and the bridge at the exit landing result in a homogeneous overall appearance.

Refined steel element for sculptural forms and structural support

According to the uniformly rounded design of the staircase, the smooth steel soffit, consisting of precisely shaped steel sheets, was welded between the cross beams on the underside of the construction.

Thanks to the absolutely uniform and flush integration by highly qualified welding experts, the bottom cladding improves the visual character of the stairs and contributes significantly to the structural support. The static gain leads to enormous material and weight savings and better vibration behavior of the stairs.

Curved all-glass railing design with elaborate assembly technology

To ensure a light and transparent design, curved all-glass sheets with a thickness of 20 mm and a length of up to 1,200 mm each have been inserted into the external cassette transom. A filigree U-section of stainless steel, fixed to the glass, provides the elegant upper finish of the railing.

The internal stainless steel handrail consists of a round tube fixed to the glass. Based on its long experience, MetallArt made the challenging installation employing a specially developed assembly method for all-glass railing systems, resulting in a perfect and highly aesthetic appearance.
