If you’re looking to adopt a new best friend, the Solano County Sheriff’s Office Animal Care Division is here for you.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Solano Animal Care is hosting its annual St. Pawtrick’s Day Adoption Event Friday and Today. For only $17, you can adopt a cat or a dog. Dogs have a small Solano County license fee.

Currently, the shelter has eight cats and 55 dogs waiting to find their forever homes. According to Amanda Hoover, volunteer and outreach coordinator, this is the most dogs she has seen at the shelter in her nine years with Solano Animal Care.

For dogs, the refuge is at full capacity and complete. They do, however, have an adoption guarantee, which means no animals will be euthanized due to space issues.

One family who enjoyed the shelter’s St. Pawtrick’s Day event included Sara Vasquez of Vacaville, as well as her 16-year-old son, Seth Ross, and 14-year-old daughter, Alexys Ross.

The family currently owns a 2 year old German Shepherd named Max. Max loves other animals, so his owners wanted to find him a companion to play with.

The trio had an encounter with Banjo, an 11-month-old Siberian Husky/German Shepherd tricolor male.

According to animal care specialist Kristeena Albright, Banjo is a shy, sweet boy who is still working on leash training, but knows how to sit.

Banjo has been at the shelter since January 24 and was found in Rio Vista on 3rd Street.

While petting Banjo, the family decides to pick up Max from home to bring him to the shelter to meet Banjo to see if they make a good duo.

Some of the cats up for adoption include a 5-year-old tuxedo, MooMoo as well as two 5-year-old black children named Dazzel and Jazzel.

An orange and white tabby cat named Teddy Bear is 7 years old and is also up for adoption.

Hoover mentioned that kitten season is right around the corner, which means many kittens will soon be available for adoption from Solano Animal Care.

In March 2022, Solano Animal Care adopted 15 cats and 28 dogs.

“We have so many dogs that need homes,” Hoover said. “We are filling up faster than we can move them, whether through adoption, rescue or transfer. Euthanasia to save space is not an option.

If you are interested in adopting a dog, cat or small animal from Solano Animal Care, you can visit the shelter today at 2510 Claybank Rd. in Fairfield to take advantage of the St. Patrick’s Day event.
