Ross Lovegrove: 10 Iconic Designs

My aesthetic combines impressive thinking, new technologies, and surprising materials—these are the principles that have guided his work Welsh industrial designer Ross Lovegrove. His designs have been exhibited in art museums and design centers around the world.

Working for Frog Design, Sony and Apple – Ross has managed to create models that have captured the hearts of people all over the world. The designer has always tried to be current and relevant, and there’s no denying that he’s succeeded in doing exactly that. Let’s take a closer look at some of his most iconic designs.

1. “Cosmic Angel” Ceiling Lamp

When creating the aluminum and ABS ceiling light, Lovegrove wanted to freeze the moment of airflow over a thin sheet. If you look at the lamp, it appears to be suspended in anti-gravity. With diffused light and a modern design, the Cosmic Angel will look great in any contemporary home.

2. Formula 1 perfume

Lovegrove has always been looking for ways to use and apply new technologies to design. These perfume bottles were no exception. In fact, before the introduction of additive 3D printing, it was impossible to manufacture.

The bottles have an intricate geometric aesthetic. In a way, it’s similar to something you might see in biology textbooks. Real sculptural objects – that’s the best way to describe them, like exoskeleton shapes.

3. The Crops Dining Chair

The industrial designer has made his fair share of chairs. This particular model was manufactured by Fasem in Italy around 1990 and is known for its elegant design.

Dining arm chair features a steel base and adjustable legs. Perhaps the most impressive aspects of the product are the curvature of the shell and the detailed upholstery, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship. Lovegrove’s creation combines the best of both worlds – a sense of luxury and plenty of comfort.

4. Ergo collection

While many of Lovegrove’s most famous works were made in the 1980s and 1990s, some of his most famous pieces don’t date back that far. For Natuzzi Italia, the Welsh designer recently created the Ergo collection, which even won a Red Dot Award in 2019.

The exceptional collection focuses on many bedroom motifs: the stunning lounge chair, bed, lamp, chandelier, mirror, valet, and even the rug.

5. Supernatural

Ross Lovegrove is all about multisensory design, and Moroso’s Supernatural showcases it. The 2005 chair has a single piece of reinforced polypropylene. In the backrest you will discover several perforations, which create an attractive game of light and shadow. Like many of Lovegrove’s designs, this one is also very versatile. It will look equally stunning both at home and in public.

6. Go chair

It’s not hard to see why the Go Chair remains so impressive, even though it’s been more than 20 years since it debuted. It is the first seat ever made using magnesium. Thanks to its curved shape, it creates the illusion of bending backwards. Even today, Bernhardt Design’s creation feels futuristic and, in some ways, “weird.”

7. The exercise chair

The London-based designer was curious and fascinated by the architecture of aircraft and racing cars. He used his knowledge of using carbon fibers to shape his Moot chair, which appears to defy gravity. The intricate curvature of the chair could not be created with any other material.

Impressively, the Moot Chair is hand-finished using an elegant high-gloss lacquer.

8. Solar Tree 2.0

One of Lovegrove’s latest works is an energy efficient interactive solution for urban lighting. Solar Tree 2.0 is the improved version of the original Solar Tree, which was created for the Angewandte Kunst Museum (MAK) in Vienna.

Thanks to its modularity (the height of the shaft and heads are variable), the product offers greater flexibility. What’s great, Solar Tree can also be combined with high-tech instruments that allow measurements of various parameters.

9. Biophilia chair

During Milan Design Week 2013, Lovegrove presented a collection for Vongom – a company well known for pushing the boundaries between material structure. In this furniture collection, the designer wished to explore a new design language that creates a conversation between time, form, and space.

10. The Twin’Z concept car

While the creative genius is mostly known for designing his furniture, Lovegrove also had his hand in car design. In 2013, he unveiled his Renault concept car.

At the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, Ross presented an electric city car, for which he provided finishing details, such as colored LED patterns, swirl stripes along the tires (developed by manufacturer Michelin), and fluorescent yellow strips.
