Reserve Street Camper With Warrants Gets Caught With Meth

On September 20, 2022, Missoula Police Department officers responded to the report of a malfunction behind a building on the 4800 block of North Reserve Street. When the officer arrived, he met the reporter who said he heard a man and woman arguing loudly in the woods behind the construction site where he was working.

As the officer spoke to the complainant, a man later identified as Joshua Hensyel, 32, walked out of the woods. According to Lydia Arnold, Hensyel screamed and was visibly upset.

“Officers spoke to him and when he calmed down Joshua gave them a name,” Arnold said. “Later in the investigation, Joshua stated that he had given the officers a false name and date of birth. During the preliminary investigation, officers spoke with all those involved and witnesses. They heard the argument was about camping.”

Court documents show that the officer observed blood on Hensyel’s bridge of the nose, along with a minor scrape. Hensyel said he and his girlfriend lived in the woods behind the job site and that they woke up cold, which led to an argument. He said the argument was only verbal and that he fell when he tried to leave the camp, chafing his nose.

“One of the parties involved gave Joshua Hensyel’s real name and officers learned that he had issued an arrest warrant,” Arnold said. “During the investigation, Hensyel became agitated and did not cooperate with the officers. When officers handcuffed him, a bag containing a crystalline substance, which officers recognized as methamphetamine, fell from Hensyel’s person.’

A true-Narc scan of the substance was performed, which was suspected to be positive for methamphetamine. The State is awaiting the chemical analysis from the State Crime Lab.

Hensyel is currently charged with felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs and obstructing a peace officer. On September 21, 2022, Hensyel first appeared in Missoula’s court and his bail was set at $25,000.
