New Report Shows Significant Economic Benefits Associated with Pet Ownership

The report, produced by the Human Animal Attachment Research Institute (HABRI), examines the healthcare cost savings associated with pet ownership in the United States. United States.
This report was made possible by a grant from Banfield Pet Hospital, co-authored by Terry L. CloverPhD and Tonya E. Thornton, PhD, MPPA, both of whom have extensive expertise in economic research and public policy. Their analysis not only reflects savings from overall improved health for pet owners in the form of fewer doctor visits per year. but also tracks specific savings for critical public health issues affecting millions of Americans. including reduced obesity reduced infection and better mental health for children, the elderly and the nation’s veterans.

How to report
The report’s authors analyzed the healthcare cost savings associated with pet ownership by examining the scientifically documented health benefits of pet ownership. Identifying the population groups that benefit from these benefits and calculate avoidable health care costs for those populations. To do this The authors first reviewed relevant academic and professional literature and peer-reviewed the health benefits of pet ownership. The most recent cost estimates for health services and treatments related to the health conditions identified in the review have been identified from a review of publicly available health care cost data. Pet ownership data is also identified from publicly available sources. Estimated savings for the US healthcare system related to pet ownership were calculated using these data. Further discussion of the identified health benefits associated with pet ownership for which cost savings are not accountable is also included in the report.
