Onondaga deputy recovers after alleged saw attack on Oncenter

A Central New York deputy is recovering after officials say the deputy was attacked on Tuesday.

According to a written statement from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, two deputies who had completed their services at the Onondaga County Justice Center “walked into the parking lot at the In the middle when a homeless Syracuse man aggressively approached them while armed with a folding handsaw and a folding metal crutch.

When the officers identified themselves, the suspect [allegedly] deliberately started to (damage) one of the deputies’ personal vehicles with the crank. While they were damaging the vehicle, officers were trying to take the suspect into custody when the suspect cut one of the officers in the face with the folding saw.” The incident took place on September 20, 2022 at approximately 11:30 PM.

The 28-year-old male sheriff’s deputy was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he was treated and released for what police described as a “major laceration.” At the time of this message, police say the deputy is doing well.

Peters, who police say is homeless and has no registered address, was taken into custody and arrested on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. He now faces several charges, including the following:

  • Attack in the second degree
  • Criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree
  • Criminal mischief in the third degree

Peters is being held in Onondaga County Jail.
