New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell has been a longtime advocate for the arts and cultural scene in New Bedford and was honored last week by the US Conference of Mayors for his commitment to and promotion of the arts.
Mitchell has been honored with the National Local Arts Leadership Award.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors states, “From the first day of his administration in 2012, Mayor Mitchell has prioritized the development of the city’s creative sector as an integral component of economic, social and cultural development that improves the quality of life of residents and visitors alike. Over the last decade, it has helped make New Bedford one of America’s most culturally unique and creative cities.”
He then pointed to the 2016 proposal for the Arts, Culture and Tourism fund, which went into effect in 2017, to use part of the city budget to promote the city’s artistic and cultural assets, just one of many ways Mitchell has pushed for more support. art. This led to the City’s first strategic arts and culture plan, released in December 2018.
“Respect for artistic expression was first woven into New Bedford’s identity during the whaling era, when the city was a global focal point for new ideas and creativity, and this sensibility has persisted through a working beehive, the foundation of thriving cultural institutions. broad civic support for artists and the arts,” Mitchell said. “This award is a validation of our city’s long legacy of excellence in creative endeavor and the hard work and creativity of our creative sector. I am proud to accept this award on behalf of all who have made New Bedford a thriving cultural hub.”
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee was awarded the National State Arts Leadership Award, and Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt won the National Local Arts Leadership Award for larger cities.
