A celebrity-approved antidote to your January blues has arrived in the form of bubbly dinnerware.
Originally from Swedish design studio Gustaf Westman Objects, the rainbow colored pieces first gained recognition in March 2022 when Scandinavian-cool influencer Matilda Djerf shared her shiny baby pink solid cup with her 2.8 million Instagram followers (below). Since then, bubble dishes of all colors and sizes have been all the rage on social media (went viral on TikTok with the hashtag #matildadjerfplates). And what can we say – except that we understand the appeal?
The best dinnerware sets demand attention – whether on a sideboard or as part of your table setting when hosting a dinner party. And these bubble plates are more than up to the challenge.
Thanks to Matilda, Gustaf Westman (opens in new tab)‘s Chunky plates and cups are (unsurprisingly) sold out on his site – but you can still buy the look through Etsy (opens in new tab). Our top picks below.
Any home decor trend endorsed by Matilda Djerf is fine with us, but Andrea Waters, Head of Brands at legendary dinnerware company Portmeirion (opens in new tab)emphasizes that 2023 is the year of bold tableware, just like the one seen in Matilda’s Swedish home.
“With Pantone releasing their Color of the Year 2023 as Viva Magenta, it is clear that bright colors will continue to be a top [dining] trend,” says Andrea. “Bringing colors like magenta and teal into your dining space can brighten up the space and be a catalyst for imaginative conversation over dinner.”

Andrea recommends pairing shades of pink (like Matilda’s) with dark block tones in your dining room. “The best way to use pink — without decorating it from scratch — is to select dining accessories such as dinner sets, placemats, and vases that feature the bright color alongside complementary tones like teal, navy, and gray,” she says.
Matilda is perhaps most associated with her baby pink cup and plate, but she’s also been known to have blue, yellow, and deep purple plates in her collection (as seen in the TikTok above). However, if your Scandinavian kitchen or dining room is more neutral, you can still follow the trend with some of the more neutral choices below.

These pastel colored plates are inspired by Scandinavian designs (like the ones mentioned above) to master the perfect combination of aesthetics and practicality. They are So very; you would have forgiven them long past breakfast time.

White Scandi bubble rimmed plates
This neutral-toned alternative is great for those with a monochromatic scheme. They’re also stackable, just in case you’re inevitably tempted to buy more than one.
