Luggage Claim: CNN’s ‘Nomad’ Carlton McCoy Shares His Must-Have Travel Gear

As the host of CNN’s popular travel show Nomad, it goes without saying that Carlton McCoy is a true travel expert. Also a trained chef and master sommelier, McCoy has special insights on where to go, what to eat, what to drink and (critically important this summer), how and what to pack.

McCoy recently shared more with Fortune about the must-have items he never leaves the house without.

Efficient checked baggage

“I always check a bag. Understand that can be a challenge right now, but I’d rather not put all my stuff in one small bag. July is my favorite luggage brand. Beautiful design, they offer a trunk style, which is much more efficient and most importantly they use a lock on the trunk instead of a zipper. I like that extra touch.”

Wine-specific baggage

“I love traveling with my wine bag, especially my Vingarde Valise. It is sturdy and the most important thing is that it fits a whole suitcase of wine. As a professional in the wine industry, I enjoy sharing my favorite wines with people I love and admire. It is no different from chefs who want to share their favorite dishes with loved ones. Sharing my favorite wines gives me real satisfaction.”

Travel-friendly clothing

“I’m not a picky dresser. I like beautiful, simple pieces. Wearing clothes that are versatile will limit the amount you have to pack. I love Todd Snyder Jeans. They have a bit of stretch so they are easy to carry. Patrick Assaraf’s t-shirts are always in the bag. It is an adult t-shirt. It is soft, but the fabric is of high quality and holds its shape very well. I always travel with a tailored blazer, almost always black. It is perfect for any occasion. I also always pack a nice white shirt. Easy to dress up or down. I also never travel without my All Saints Mode Merino Wool hoodie. Lightweight and good for most occasions. When I’m not traveling for NomadI always have sportswear.”

Sustainable footwear

“I’ve had a show addiction since I was a kid, but as a man with big feet I can only travel with so many pairs, so I pick three pairs for each trip. Running shoes (Nike ZoomX Vaporfly), a multi-purpose sneaker (Air Force 1 or Onitsuka GSM) and custom ostrich boots made by David Espinoza, I can wear these with a full suit and tie or jeans and a t-shirt.

Reliable timepiece

“I always travel with my 1960s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust and pack something more formal – like my Franck Mueller Casablanca – when I know I have an important event or business meeting. I have always admired the amazing craftsmanship that goes into a great watch and a great watch will make even jeans and a t-shirt shine.”

This is an episode of Baggage Claim, formerly known as 5 to Pack, a series featuring famous personalities from all different backgrounds and industries, revealing what they always pack when they travel, for business or pleasure.
