Walls are the largest surface of any space and become the envelope that creates a room, making it one of the most essential interior design and decor elements. In today’s world of technology and innovation, there is a wide range of wall finishing options available, such as paint, wallcovering and wallpaper, with the latter growing in popularity. Not only is wallpaper aesthetically pleasing and achievable in many options, but it also has a quick application and quick turnaround time, making it a favorite among interior designers and homeowners.
Playful patterns have always made the case for drawing visual interest, while bold wallpapers featuring optically elusive geometries or a wheelhouse of colors are perfect for setting up an accent wall. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Meena Murthy Kakkar, Design Head and Partner of Envisage, said: “It is crucial to understand what “bold” wallpapers mean. A wallpaper can be bold in print or texture and often even a combination of both In general, if the background color of the wallpaper is bold or striking, then the print over it will be subdued or minimal.Interestingly, there are many options in textured wallpapers available in the market with patterns that include embroidery and even sequencing.
She advised: “The overall color scheme should be well thought out for a bold wallpaper to fit into the design theme. For example, the bold color should not be the main color used in the room and the minor color of the wallpaper should be reflected by the space. In addition, the fabric and upholstery around the bold wallpaper should complement it or be minimal or simple to stand out. Therefore, a balance of furniture, fabrics and wallpaper should be conceptualized together. Also, the placement of the wallpaper in the room should be planned carefully, with plenty of breathing space around it. For the wallpaper to be the highlight of the room, it should be controlled in quantity and limited to an area.”
Custom wallpaper with unique designs and prints is a great way to brighten up a dull wall and of course the long lasting finish it provides the interior compared to paint is an added bonus. Rachna Agarwal, founder and design ideator of Studio IAAD, shared some tips for choosing the best one for your space and shared 3 things to keep in mind when using bold wallpapers:
1. Size Matters – Balancing the print is critical, especially if you want to make a big impression in a compact room. While opting for smaller geometric shapes is a safer route, you’ll be surprised at how smart, bolder designs can add to the sense of expansiveness. Optical illusion, especially in mural-inspired wallpaper designs, can create the illusion of a larger space. It helps balance the compact physical proportions of the room without appearing chaotic or too fussy.
2. Consider the cohesive design – Don’t be limited to just colors or textures. An interplay of different materials, textures and color schemes helps create a cohesive design scheme. Make sure you don’t get carried away with mere shades and prints. Instead, consider the subtle inclusions or exclusions that will offset loud prints. For example, choose a wallpaper that matches your existing decor or vice versa.
3. Let there be a story – Bold wallpaper is a pictorial means of expression that brings the residents’ experiences and journeys to life. For example, a design that depicts nature and botanical themes is reminiscent of a tropical vacation. Others may be rooted in tradition and celebrate artisanal design to make a bold yet timeless statement that reflects one’s personality.
According to Devika Khosla, Creative Director at The Works Interiors, “From digital and abstract prints, floral prints and even 3D wallpapers, one can choose from a variety of colours, textures, prints and patterns to make a bold statement for their spaces, depending of the atmosphere and desired aesthetics. For example, if you want a lively summer or tropical look, a wallpaper with a floral print is a good option. On the other hand, if the room is neutral and classic, a monochromatic embossed wallpaper or three-dimensional wall finish will add dynamism to a room. In fact, wallpaper is an ideal solution for aesthetically covering imperfections and old paint and adding a refreshed look and feel.”
She advised: “Additionally, with the peel and stick wallpaper options available today, people have the flexibility to keep experimenting and being playful. If you have a particular design in mind, some sellers offer customization and some artists even have the wallpaper with the hand painted Treat the wall like a piece of art and experiment with the space by using bold colors and pieces that are sure to add a distinct personality to anyone’s space.”
