Interior: A bit of all white: ways to incorporate white decor into your home

IT’S a timeless summer product that can brighten up the dullest of rooms – no wonder our love affair with white furniture shows no sign of abating.

“The perfect simplicity of white should not be underestimated, its versatility can warm up a cold room, brighten a dull room or turn a lifeless interior into an enticing personal home,” says Chrissie Rucker OBE, founder of The White Company.

“A white scheme is brilliant for bringing a sense of lightness and serenity to a room.”

When decorating with white, Rucker’s advice is to add texture and use natural elements that connect us back to nature.

“A super soft rug underfoot or a sheer covering by a window can really transform a room,” she says. “Add weathered wood, linen or marbled slate to add interest.”

For walls, choose warm white instead of cold, blue-white tones. “Ivory, alabaster, chalk and many other soft whites are on the market. I love its almost spa-like quality, which in our hectic world is nice to come home to,” adds Rucker.

Wil Law, home stylist at John Lewis & Partners, says: “Decorating with soothing pale shades is incredibly versatile and can work brilliantly in busy, modern homes.

“Pair neutral tones with natural materials such as rattan and jute, for a relaxed and easy decor.”

The law says that white can also be used to highlight a room. For example, neutral soft furnishings work well against darker shades of furniture and rugs.
