Inside Los Angeles Chargers Quarterback Chase Daniel’s Peaceful California Home by Intimate Living Interiors

The heavy, dated moldings had to go. Kari Arendsen, director of Intimate Living Interiors, was rediscovering a 12,000-square-foot Tuscan-style residence in Rancho Santa Fe, California, for some high-profile clients: Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Chase Daniel and his wife Hillary, who three children. “They were nervous that we were taking everything away,” the designer recalls. “But removing a lot of that texture improved and increased the end result.”

Arendsen — who worked closely with her business partner, Tory Peterson, and architect Mark Radford to refurbish the five-bedroom, six-bath (and two half-bath) home — wanted the interior to feel “fresh and vibrant.” The right lighting was key to this vision: Arendsen strategically placed sconces, ceiling fixtures and LEDs to create different moods in each room. She and her team have also redecorated many spaces to better suit the needs of the family – for example, turning the existing bar into a cozy corner perfect for reading and meditating. “We wanted to bring a sense of silence,” Arendsen says. “To create spaces where they can get quiet, feel comfortable and come together.”

“We wanted to create a sense of silence.”

No expense has been spared in the kitchen, from the custom Lacanche range to the backlit steel cabinets. There is a hidden coffee bar (complete with its own tap) and fridge drawers deliberately placed within reach of the kids are stocked with every snack imaginable. The layout of the 900-square-foot space — including a butler’s kitchenette, breakfast nook, and walk-in closet — was also redesigned, with a passageway connecting the interior space to the backyard barbecue station (for obvious reasons).

A calm color palette is interrupted by moments of soft green. “It was important for the customers to bring a sense of nature everywhere,” Arendsen reveals, pointing to viridescent pendant lights above the kitchen island (hand-painted in a custom color) and dramatic forest green walls in the home office. “Everyone thinks blue when they think of rest,” Hillary says, “but using green has the same calming effect and is more interesting.”
