DIY genius Astin Hancock guided her 46.7k TikTok followers through the project, which she says was surprisingly simple.

“Do you hate that empty space above your cupboards?” Hancock asked in the clip’s caption. “It’s easier than you think to fill it with extra closet boxes.”

The key components of the impressive DIY solution were pieces of plywood, a drill, screws and paint, which gave both the cubbies and cabinets a facelift.

“I just built a few plywood boxes, installed them there and added some embellishments,” Hancock said, before showing viewers the process up close.

For starters, she measured the area above the cabinets. Although Hancock made boxes to customize her space, you can also use preassembled storage crates, available at many hardware stores.

Then Hancock made sure the boxes fit snugly between the cabinets, walls, and ceiling before screwing them into place.

After the boxes were fastened, she applied the border to the front with the help of her daughter. Before she primed and painted everything, she removed her closet doors.

“So I just used a brush and roller on the boxes,” she explained in the comments. “I took the doors off and sprayed them for a smoother finish.”

After painting the cabinets sage green, Hancock was left with a cohesive look and a kitchen update that looked like a professional renovation.

The new cabinets looked great with the epoxy countertops and new backsplash she added as part of the kitchen refurbishment.

Hancock also encouraged other DIY fans to experiment with their own versions of the project. You don’t have to stick with easily accessible maps like hers, she said.

“You can always add doors to them if you want them to be locked to store things you might not use often,” Hancock explained.

In the comment section, viewers praised the DIY and several people said they were amazed at the results.

“I had such low expectations,” confessed one viewer. “I didn’t trust the process and that was my mistake.

“That’s a great DIY transformation,” another commenter wrote for approval. “I love it when people have good ideas to take advantage of previously wasted space.”
