House Democrats shake their leadership: Nancy’s Number Two Steny Hoyer, 83, ALSO anti-team New York Representative Hakeem Jeffries to resign to make way for younger members

  • Hoyer’s announcement came after Pelosi said she would not want to be a spokesperson at the next Congress.
  • This shakeup paves the way for Representative Hakeem Jeffries to jump several leadership stages in the next Congress and replace Pelosi.
  • Jeffries currently chairs the House Democratic Caucus and will be the first black lawmaker to lead a party.
  • In a letter to his fellow Democrats, Hoyer said he was proud of his work, but said “now is the time for a new generation of leaders”.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer will follow in the footsteps of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in January and step down to make way for new leadership.

This shake-up paves the way for Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the current chairman of the House Democratic Group, to skip several leadership positions and replace Pelosi in the next Congress. Since the Democrats would no longer have the majority, Jeffries would become the minority leader.

In a letter to his fellow Democrats, Hoyer said he was proud of his work, but said “now is the time for a new generation of leaders”.

Hoyer endorsed Jeffries, who is currently facing no opponents.

“I look forward to serving as a resource in my capacity to best assist him, the rest of our Democratic leadership team, and our entire Group of Nations, as we move forward together to address the nation’s challenges,” Hoyer wrote.

In a letter to his fellow Democrats, Hoyer said he was proud of his work, but said “now is the time for a new generation of leaders”.

Hoyer said he plans to return to the powerful Allocation Committee, where he plans to focus on education, health and domestic production.

“I also look forward to continuing to focus on voting rights, civil rights and human rights, which I have prioritized throughout my public life,” he wrote.

Jeffries, 52, was among a raucous faction of his party’s geriatric Democrat leadership team pressing for younger voices to step aside.

Hoyer, an 83-year-old Maryland Democrat, was first elected to the House in 1981. He is the second-ranked Democrat and Pelosi’s second-in-command since 2003.

During the 1960s, both Hoyer and Pelosi served on the staff of Maryland Democratic Senator Daniel Brewster. He continued to serve in the Maryland state senate and was appointed to the Maryland Board of Higher Education before entering the House.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that she will not seek reelection to the Democratic leadership next year, although she will remain a member of Congress.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that she will not seek reelection to the Democratic leadership next year, although she will remain a member of Congress.

“My friends, my colleagues, whatever title you may have given me, speaker, leader, whip, there is no greater official honor for me than to stand on this floor and speak for the people of San Francisco.” In an emotional speech on the parliament floor, he said:

The Republicans take the House, while the Democrats lose the speakership, rising to three out of four leadership spots. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, DSC said he would not be entering one of the top three official leadership positions and would be happy to remain in an honorary role.

Current deputy spokesperson, D-Mass Representative, Katherine Clark, is seeking the minority whip position, and current Democratic Caucus Deputy Speaker Pete Aguilar is vying for the Democratic Caucus presidency.

Speaker Pelosi has left an indelible mark on Congress and the country, and I look forward to her continuing service and doing everything she can to help our next generation of Democratic Leaders, which I hope will be Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar. ‘ Clyburn said in a statement.

Democrats will hold their leadership elections on November 30.

Jeffries would become the first black MP to lead both houses in history. Jeffries and Pelosi have a close relationship, but Jeffries has not formed such close ties with his party’s left wing. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez even considered starting a primary fight against her in 2020.
