FX Matt Brewing Acquires Flying Dog Brewery in Maryland

Utica’s FX Matt Brewing Company is acquiring Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, Maryland, Flying Dog announced in a recent statement.

FX Matt Brewing Company, founded in 1888, produces its own soft drinks, Utica Club and Saranac beers, and the range of products in those lines and contract manufacturing continues to grow.

The brewery now packs bottles and cans, wines, energy drinks, distilled spirits and juices.

FX Matt Brewing has also produced a number of Flying Dog beers over the past decade. due to restrictions at Flying Dog’s brewery in Maryland, according to a statement.

Fred Matt, CEO of FX Matt Brewing Company, said: “Flying Dog has built an incredible brand. award winning beer “When you think of craft beer in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic, Flying Dog is the first brand that comes to mind. We are excited to work with such a great brand. And I look forward to helping Flying Dog reach new heights.”

Details of the acquisition deal were not immediately disclosed.

What’s coming to Utica

Flying Dog will shift all brewing to FX Matt over the summer and is expected to cease operations in August. However, FX Matt is planning to keep its tap room and innovative brewery in the Frederick area.

Both companies believe that the transition will be smooth based on their joint history.

Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso said FX Matt is offering as many employment opportunities as possible to Flying Dog employees. Flying Dog will also provide recruitment assistance to employees, Caruso said.

Flying Dog CMO Ben Savage will become FX Matt Brewing’s Flying Dog division president, according to a statement.

Caruso said that Flying Dog’s brewery today, despite multi-million dollar investments But there are too many restrictions that put beer companies at a competitive disadvantage.

“I can’t think of a better steward for the Flying Dog brand moving forward than FX Matt Brewing Company,” Caruso said in a statement. “We have been working with them for many years. They are a family-owned brewery with over 135 years of history. They are committed to building on the deep roots that Flying Dog founded in Maryland. And their abilities will take Flying Dog to a whole new level.”
