Debbie Travis House of the House: Attention-grabbing ceilings

Dear Debbie: I’m thinking of adding some decoration to the bedroom ceiling. Unlike any other room, it is often looked at. What are some ideas? – Francis

Dear Frances: We don’t think much about decorating the ceilings in our rooms, we just paint the ceiling white and it’s finished. But believed to be the fifth wall, the ceiling decoration adds a new layer of interest that can be stunning. Also, ceilings are more noticeable than you think. Although all but the lowest are above eye view, they both contribute to the whole image. Here are some fantastical treats I think you’ll love.

The shingles can extend across a vaulted or flat ceiling to enhance the rustic style that connects to the outside.

Think of materials other than paint. In a refreshing summer bedroom, a grass cloth was laid on the walls and then cut into squares for the ceiling. By rotating ceiling squares, you can create color variations to create a fun, neutral pattern. White moldings add more dimension, breaking up tall walls and defining the ceiling.

Instead of paint or paper, why not drape a wide strip of fabric high above the bed? Choose a fabric that’s rich in color and pattern for a boho look, or a soft, pastel-colored silk cloth that will create a cocoon-like atmosphere.

Vaulted ceilings show their character with wooden beams or panels. The rustic style of natural wood paneling connects to the rustic outdoor setting that has a warm, rustic appeal. To create different patterns, you can use gilded wallpaper. Check out the many designs and textures now available in wallcoverings. Flat or raised paper surfaces mimic many shapes, including wood, water, pebbles, and geometric patterns.
