Craig Melvin’s mom just called him out to work.
On Wednesday, Today shared a hilarious clip in which the morning show co-anchor got a surprise from his mom, who sent a video clip asking today’s guest, Bobby Flay, to encourage Melvin to help out on Thanksgiving.
The video starts with 3rd class today co-host Sheinelle Jones says they have another viewer question and jokes that the person shares the same name as her mother, Betty Jo. “My mother’s name?” Melvin asked, adding “Oh Jesus” as he saw his mother appear on the screen.
“Bobby, how do you get your kid to help you on Thanksgiving when he only wants to watch football?” Melvin’s mother laughed.
When Flay asked Melvin if she was really his mother, he joked, “She used to be. Now she’s been denied.”
The broadcast journalist tried to refute his mother’s claims. “For the record, I help occasionally, sometimes,” to which Flay replied “No, no, no, obviously she’s calling you out.”
Flay then answered Betty Jo’s question. “First and foremost, you’re the mom, so you’re in charge. You get to tell your son what to do, no matter what — Thanksgiving or the other 364 days of the year,” he said. “But if he wants to watch football, then I completely understand. So like to get a small little TV for the kitchen. That’s what I do.”
Flay added, “You gotta have football on Thanksgiving,” to which Craig emphatically exclaimed “Yes!” The Food Network star made sure to still support Melvin’s mom by adding another thought: “But also, you’re going to have to get in the kitchen.”
“Thanks Bobby. Thanks Mom,” Melvin said. “It was good.”

When it comes to holiday preparations, Flay is very hands-on in the kitchen, while his girlfriend, Christina Pérez, is in charge of the decor.
During a tour of the new Food Network test kitchen in New York City earlier this month, the well-known chef and restaurateur told Entertainment tonight that Pérez “really makes sure the tablescape is beautiful and the house looks festive and beautiful.”
