This building has an interesting history in its own right: Begun in 1970 by developer Jack Wolgin, who in Philadelphia in the ’70s was what Willard Ross, Bart Blatstein, and Karl Dranoff put together in the decades that followed, this 33-story, 314-shadow tower that It stands a foot tall, incomplete for more than a decade. Wolgin’s first lender called in his loans after deciding that the main lot in the yard could support a building taller than the apartment house he had originally planned; Then, having found a second bank willing to finance the resumption of work in 1983, that bank also foreclosed two years later, resulting in a mess of lawsuits and a shell of concrete and steel piling over the arena.

The developer who bought the lot from Wolgin in 1986 had a much easier time than that, finishing the building in 1989 as a luxury hotel-apartment complex. Both the hotel and the apartment have done a good job since they opened. However, in recent years, the owners of many of The Rittenhouse’s apartments have chosen to update or even completely renovate their units, which have come to resemble 1980’s period pieces.

These two units were combined and rebuilt in 2016. No longer vintage pieces, they are now the epitome of modern German Scandinavian beauty, simple and comfortable at the same time. Designed by Alfred Dragani and Concetta Martone of Dragoni Marton Studio (dMAS), this apartment was awarded the AIA Philadelphia Award for Merit in 2019.

Hand-plastered white walls make this abode bright and airy by reflecting the abundant natural light that floods in through its many windows. Meanwhile, polished stone and wood accents give it warmth.

One side of the living room flows directly into the dining area and kitchen. As befits a modern, open plan, European-style apartment, you won’t find a formal dining room here. Instead, a four-person dining table is built into Poggenpohl’s Angela Pulizzi-designed kitchen. Its cabinets shine from a mix of paint and glass, and its Wolf, Sub-Zero, and Bosch appliances are as top drawer as the designer/manufacturer.

And speaking of appliances, the Sub-Zer0 wine refrigerator, pictured above, holds 175 bottles.

All those angles, views, and windows come courtesy of the building’s ziggurat-like exterior, a feature that makes it almost unique among Philadelphia skyscrapers.
