This building has an interesting history in its own right: Begun in 1970 by developer Jack Wolgin, who in Philadelphia in the ’70s was what Willard Ross, Bart Blatstein, and Karl Dranoff put together in the decades that followed, this 33-story, 314-shadow tower that It stands a foot tall, incomplete for more than a decade. Wolgin’s first lender called in his loans after deciding that the main lot in the yard could support a building taller than the apartment house he had originally planned; Then, having found a second bank willing to finance the resumption of work in 1983, that bank also foreclosed two years later, resulting in a mess of lawsuits and a shell of concrete and steel piling over the arena.

The developer who bought the lot from Wolgin in 1986 had a much easier time than that, finishing the building in 1989 as a luxury hotel-apartment complex. Both the hotel and the apartment have done a good job since they opened. However, in recent years, the owners of many of The Rittenhouse’s apartments have chosen to update or even completely renovate their units, which have come to resemble 1980’s period pieces.
