Every year, about 6.5 million pets enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of these, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets available for adoption at shelters across the valley. To check the status of a particular animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Callie is a true testament to why the Arizona Humane Society continues to work to find new and innovative ways to save the lives of even more animals every day. The 4-year-old dilute tortoiseshell kitten was originally rescued by AHS as an underage and orphaned kitten all the way back in 2018 at just a few weeks old. After a few months of nurturing to bring her to adoption age and weight in AHS’ Bottle Baby Intensive Care Unit and a Foster Hero loving home, Callie was quickly adopted.
