Big Dzz House BBQ opens in Tallmadge

It’s 7 o’clock – time for pulled pork. And ribs. And chicken. Make some fresh sauce. And don’t forget the sides.

It’s only a few hours before the lunchtime rush starts at Big Dzz House BBQ, and owner A’Delbert Cobbin is sweating in the kitchen.

For nearly a decade, Cobbin, who is originally from Firestone Park, has been supplying the Akron area with his homemade barbecue and southern food truck fare. Now Big Dzz has found a home in Tallmadge at 284 West Ave.

“I never stopped chasing my dream of cooking for other people,” he said. “I love it. I can stand in a kitchen all day and it doesn’t bother me.”

A'Delbert Cobbin owns Big Dzz House BBQ in Tallmadge.

Growing up, he watched his family cook meals from scratch, and in high school his interest in cooking professionally sparked. By the time he turned 16, Cobbin was working in a kitchen.

Cobbin opened the physical drive-thru for Big Dzz on April 25 after seeing the building vacant for months.

“I’ve been rolling down this street for a long time and this place just fell into my lap,” he said. “Two months ago I was driving back up West Avenue and saw the ‘For Rent’ sign. I called and said I’m ready to move on.”

He said his food truck will still be used and he will continue catering, but he is seeking more help to bolster his sole proprietorship

Cobbin, a single parent of five children and eight grandchildren, does everything herself: from cooking and cleaning to taking orders. But he said his kids help when he really needs it.

The only thing he loves more than cooking is his family. He said his grandmother is his biggest influence in the kitchen.

“My parents and grandmother were from Mississippi. She taught me that if you cook, you better cook enough for everyone,” he said. “I used to ask her why she cooks so much and she’d say, ‘You never know who’s coming by,’ but you better make sure you’ve had enough. When you come over, you’ll eat.”
