American Furniture Hall of Fame opens nominations for Paul Broyhill Award

The American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Foundation is inviting nominations for the Paul Broyhill Future Leader Award, presented at April’s High Point Market. Each nominee must be under the age of 40 and will be selected based on a point-based assessment of the nominee’s leadership, potential for personal growth, communication skills and commitment to the industry.

The Paul Broyhill Future Leaders Award, named after one of the industry’s leading families and a company focused on executive education, is awarded annually to five emerging leaders. James Edgar Broyhill bought a struggling furniture company in 1926 and, despite the Great Depression, grew the business to over 1,000 employees. Paul Broyhill worked alongside his father, eventually becoming CEO. A marketing genius and innovator, he made Broyhill Furniture a household name, growing the company to six million square feet of manufacturing space and employing over 7,000 workers. “Rather than just building factories, I like to think I built people,” Paul Broyhill would say.

“The symbol of the Paul Broyhill Future Leader Award is a torch to symbolize the transmission of leadership to new generations. The Hall of Fame celebrates extraordinary leadership across the industry, and that includes rising stars who have set their sights on excellence,” said Karen McNeill, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “This recognition is impactful and meaningful, not just for the individual, but for the industry to shine a light on those who will soon be leaders.”

Paul Broyhill’s future leaders will reunite with Hall of Fame inductees at an intimate evening designed to unite today’s young leaders with the experience and wisdom of Hall of Fame inductees. A reception and dinner are hosted at the McNeill House and FurnitureToday Founder Steve Pond hosts a guided discussion on leadership and innovation.

The profile of a future Paul Broyhill leader is:

  • Under 40
  • An innovator
  • A leader among his peers
  • Committed to the furniture industry
  • Willing to participate in a guided discussion with inductees
  • Someone you would like to recognize and encourage

“We are looking for candidates who represent all segments and disciplines of the furniture industry,” McNeill said. “Former Paul Broyhill executives have experience in retail, home accents, storage manufacturing, upholstery manufacturing, furniture design, technology, sales and more.”
