AIA Los Angeles recognizes crème de la crème of residential architecture

The results are in for the 2022 Residential Architecture Awards and the Architectural Photography Awards, the Los Angeles division of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|LA) announced at a cocktail party on May 20 in West Hollywood. Twenty-eight exceptional residential projects were awarded in eight categories and 18 photos were recognized in three categories.

The winning housing projects were grouped by typology: single-family home (small, medium, large), multi-residential (small, medium, large), adaptive reuse, additions and additional housing units, affordable housing, sustainable housing and temporary housing. Projects within each category were also distinguished by award level – honor, merit and citation – with honor being the highest award.

Central themes reflected in this year’s prices include addressing issues such as the housing crisis and climate change. In addition to a Merit Award in the Affordable Housing category, Koning Eizenberg Architecture also received the Climate Positive Award for Flor 401 Lofts.

“Flor 401 Loft illustrates how climate sensitive design is inextricably linked to a truly equitable housing solution,” said the jury of the 2022 AIA|LA Residential Architecture Awards, a panel consisting of Flora Lee associate partner, MAD Architects; Gisela Loehlein, chief of architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and Stacy Williams Bunche Center Librarian at UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies

The 2022 AIA|LA Residential Architecture Awards also spotlighted women and minority-owned companies, including Design, Bitches and Shin Shin, with the latter also being part of a handful of entrants to the awards.

The Architectural Photography Awards were divided into three categories: Best Image, Best Rendering and Best Instagram Feed. A total of 18 photos from 15 photographers were recognized based on how successful they were at creating new ways to see familiar work. The panel that decided the Honor, Merit and Citation awards included architectural photographer Ashok Sinha, Montalba Architects founder David Montalba and Elizabeth Parker, chief creative officer at Shimahara Visual.

Below is the full list of winners from both the 2022 AIA|LA Residential Architecture Awards and the Architectural Photography Awards. All winning projects in the Residential Architecture Awards are located in the city of Los Angeles or LA County unless otherwise noted. And while we’ve included photos of the Honor Award winners from both award programs in the list below, images of all This year’s AIA|LA-acclaimed housing projects and photos can be viewed here and here.
