A new interpretation of traditional architectural symbols in a compact apartment

Time and light played a duet in the Duet flat. Located in a quiet alley in the city center, the 39 sqm Duet Apartment embraces rich and contrasting Taiwanese landscapes, from metropolitan architecture to vibrant neighborhoods filled with traditional markets and old buildings. The intriguing geographical characteristic between the old and the new made us wonder: In what new ways can the old cultural memory continue with the development of urban renewal? Taking this concept as a spatial spirit, we started a hybrid change while maintaining the traditional image by converting materials, silhouettes and cultural background together with forms of modern space, echoing the spaciousness of Taiwanese society. Meanwhile, we avoided excess design in this small apartment. |A new interpretation of traditional imagery| Traditional elements such as roof tiles and earthen walls inspired the shapes for this case. These factors eventually evolved into design codes, such as straight lines, corners and arches. We first separated and rearranged the space and merged it with natural and textured materials. It became a peaceful kingdom that opened up a dialogue between new and old. The living room ceiling took its rhythmic shape from the tiles on the bungalow’s roof terrace. Its dynamic movement also implies coherent sound waves that connect the unique vitality of the nearby market. The ups and downs of the arches reduce the pressure of height restrictions. Converting the idea of ”layer by layer”, the ceiling cleverly expands the hidden storage function. The public space consists of diatomaceous earth paint, ceramic colored plaster and light oak to complete a calm and natural look. Therefore, people feel the warmth and attention of Mother Earth. The environmentally friendly diatomaceous earth paint can adjust the humidity in the interior and modify the moisture problem caused by the weather and the direction of the building. |Open the space and go upward| While capturing cultural images in the interior, we used “open” and “upward development” strategies for the project. The vertical development creates a choice of views between height transitions. It introduces natural light and significantly improves ventilation, changing the original dark and oppressive condition and turning it into a livable, light and airy environment. We settled on large geometric volumes with different shapes to balance the light feeling of the room. These volumes break the barriers and act as an invisible division. Public areas such as the living room, kitchen, dining area and multi-functional reading area were redefined and efficiently organized. The progressive ground plan shapes the visual depth of the field. Eyes were eventually caught by the maple tree down on the balcony. The lingering rhyme naturally spreads around. By controlling the free circulation of light and air flow, the hollowed-out cabinets and armrests bring the fun of different perspectives. They expand infinite imaginary possibilities and act as a device to separate public and private areas. The staircase with a concave folded position achieves aesthetics and practicality. Besides connecting the sunlight from the bedroom on the mezzanine and showing the rhythm of the rising lines, the staircase also hides a secret storage space below. Despite the limited space, the apartment still provides ample storage. Every detail in the Duet Apartment has nuances and meaning, with a deep hope that the residents can live in peace and contentment.
